Design and Looks
The N79 measures at 110 x 49 x 15 mm and weighs 97g. The phone is extremely well built and fits in the palm perfectly. The front of the phone sports a opaque plastic and is redundant to finger smudges. The left part of the phone features the microUSB slot, the microSD card slot and the charger plug whereas the right side houses the stereo speakers, volume rocker button and a dedicated camera key. The rear of the phone comprises of 5 mega pixel camera . The rear panel is plastic again with gloss.
The phone hosts a QVGA display capable of displaying 16 M colours. The display has excellent colors with contrast. Coming to the keys on the phone, starting with D-pad which is neatly designed with ample space for the largest thumb with equally spaced wide navigation keys in the surroundings. The alphanumeric keypad is a treat to use as it's big and with equal spacing among the keys giving a comfortable and ease of use while typing long messages. There is also the multimedia key which is the biggest on the interface and is nicely tucked in the sides towards its left.
Nokia N79 runs on the Symbian S60 3rd Edition OS 9.3 running Feature Pack 2. The phone works on the powerful 369 MHZ ARM with 128 MB of Ram and 83 MB of phone memory which is expandable to 8 GB. The phone comes with QuickOffice , Adobe Reader and an application to open up zip files.
The handset comes along with a 5megapixel camera with auto focus and dual LED flash. The camera is automatically started when the slide is open. The camera application comes with multiple settings and various modes . There are manual settings by which the resolution , white balance, exposure compensation , colour tone , light sensitivity , sharpness , contrast and the flash settings. The camera can record videos in VGA resolution at 30FPS.
The music player in the N79 supports the MP3/AAC/eAAC/eAAC+/WMA and WAV formats. It also has an 8 band equalizer along with Balance, Loudness and Stereo Widening settings and can also display album art. The audio output is very good but lacks bass. The phone also sports a FM transmitter which can transmit the audio files over any FM frequency.
The browsing features on the phone give it a good enjoyable experience. The browser is capable of rendering pages similar to PC. With flash support for YouTube Videos and landscape supports the phone is a pleasure to surf the web through.
The phone has brilliant connectivity features with Wifi, GPRS/EDGE. The handset comes along with a GPS module. The company offers 3 months of free voice navigation on the phone. The GPS works well and is quick in responding back with directions and pointing out locations too.
